SHARJAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The Sharjah International Airport is considered as the first class airport in the Arab Gulf area. Since its opening on the 1st of January, 1977, it showed continuous increase in the transportation of passengers, freight and mail. Even before the opening of the new airport, the Sharjah air navigation gained different experiences which enabled to stand in the air transportation world full of competition.

The construction works commenced on 1975. The architectural designs of the airport are that of the Islamic type. It consists of four domed shape buildings with the capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year. The Sharjah International Airport is considered as one of the most beautiful airports of the world. It contains the most advanced technology of safety equipments and speedy handling in connection with landing equipments, lightening, navigation, telecommunications, meteorological, fire brigade and a twenty-four hours of first aid. All the ground services including the important technical services and navigation control are provided in a very high international standards under the supervision of the Frankfurt Airport Society. The crafts maintenance service department is handled by qualified and experienced engineers approved by the Federal Navigation Society, the Civil Navigation Society and the Universal Air Transport Union.

A new building for catering was established. Also, there are two freight stores of 7400 meters wide, equipped with the most advanced technology in order to handle all kinds of freight including those which need special handling. These two stores commenced operations in April 1980.

On 21st of April 1979, His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed AI-Qasimi, opened the airport officially. So, the Sharjah Emirate became popular to tourists and investors. The Sharjah International Airport shall continue serving its great role in attracting people and trade from all over the world. Through ten years of continuous work, the Sharjah International Airport, achieved great goals which stand as a distinguished achievement when compared with other international airports.
