The UAE has long been hailed as a land of peace. People of more than 100 different nationalities live in peace and harmony in the country that has a large number of expatriates. The peaceful co- existence between peoples of different nationalities has turned the UAE into a land of economic prosperity and an oasis of peace and stability.
To convey its message of peace to the region and countries across the globe, Emirates Post has adopted 'peace' as the theme for its annual Postcard Promotion, which is being conducted for the third successive year from October 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003, with total prizes worth over Dhs. 1 .5 million.
Emirates Post has issued four stamps to highlight the theme, featuring the designs from the postcards, portraying beautiful photographs of UAE landscape along with the image of a fluttering dove, the universal symbol of peace.
The first stamp, in the denomination of 50 Fils, encapsulates the beauty of the zakharaf, the intricate and ornate Islamic designs used in the arches of old houses.
The second stamp, in the denomination of 225 Fils, features the door of a traditional house topped by the barjeel (wind-tower), the ingenuous ventilation system developed by the people of the region.
Another stamp, issued in the denomination of 275 Fils, depicts the entrance of a traditional merchant's house, with decorative columns, signifying the social status of the owner.
The fourth stamp, in the denomination of 325 Fils, features the abras, the famous water-taxis used to ferry passengers from one side of the creek to the other, which even today serve as a means of public transport.
