Fashion has a great role in people life, since its relation with society and national entity is so strong that it reflects and demonstrates people cultural, racial and social personality and identity.

In coordination with Department of Museums and Heritages – Government of Umm Al Quwain, Emirates Post issued a set of special stamps on the following traditional fashions of UAE women in six denominations.

Al Serwal (Drawers): Made either from silk or cotton, it is worn under the jalabia and is called “Khalaq”or Sharbet.

Al Thob (Robe): It is generally embroidered from the front part. Collar and sleeves are wide, called “jinan”.

Al Abaiah (Gown): It is black, worn by women to cover their garments and to be modest.

Al Kandoura (Jalabia): It may be embroidered or made of plain cloth with designs of plants or any other clothes that are figured with plants designs. There are two types: plain (opened from the back) and embroidered (from the side or from the middle of the jalabia.

Al Shailah (Scarf): It is used for covering the head. There are many types of Shailah: Almangadah, Alwasmah, Alsary and Altor. It may be called “Wiggayah” in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Al Burga (Yashmak): Used for covering the nose and the mouth, “yashmak” is put on the face to cover the front part. It is made of special type of cloth (Al shail).
