The Zayed International Prize for the Environment was established in honor of a unique statesman and a dedicated environmentalist, H.H. SHEIKH ZA YED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN, President of the United Arab Emirates, for his vision and unwavering commitment to the environmental cause. Being under the patronage of the General H.H. SHEIKH MOHAMED BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM, Crown Prince of Dubai UAE Defence Minister, it is not just a Prize it is an institution, which endeavours to promote sustainable development through, various environmental protection initiatives. In addition to administering the prestigious Prize of one million dollars, this newly-established Institution also organizes regional and international conferences and forums on specific environmental issues, publishes a monthly newsletter, conducts and supports scientific research, and helps raise environmental awareness through public lectures, seminars and workshops.
The Zayed Prize is organising the "Dubai International Conference on Water Resources and Integrated Management in the Third Millennium" in continuation of the international efforts to highlight and stress the importance of this vital resource and the grave consequences of present mismanagement. The general objectives of the conference and exhibition are the exchange of scientific knowledge and technology transfer. The Zayed Prize hopes that the discussion of this life-supporting issue will lead to the articulation of clear and effective mechanisms for the conservation and management of our scarce water resources. It also hopes to issue a "Dubai Declaration on Sustainable Development of Water Resources in Arid Regions” as a contribution towards highlighting this issue in the next Earth Summit, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), which will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2002.
The conference has been organised in collaboration with several national and international organisations such as the Emirates Post, UAE University, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, Dubai Police HQ, Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, ERWDA, International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, Dubai TV and Federal Environmental Agency, in addition to International organisations such as United Nations Environment Program and United States Geological Survey.
