Dubai 2003, The Annual Meetings of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group and IMF |
The United Arab Emirates has a long and proud history as a trading centre, a place for the interchange of products and ideas, of philosophies and cultural riches. Today Dubai, the crossroads of the new global economy, is renowned as a modern marvel filled with elegant skyscrapers, world famous ports, state-of-the-art technology centres, an enviable infrastructure and some of the world's finest hotels and resorts.
This year for first time in the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates, namely the city of Dubai, is host to the Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.
Representatives of the 184 member countries of the Bank and the Fund, unite to discuss the course of global economic development and formulate underpinning policy strategies.
To commemorate this significant event, Emirates Post has issued a set of commemorative stamps in four denominations representing the unique culture of the United Arab Emirates and a souvenir sheet illustrating the events logo in English and Arabic.
The 50 Fils stamp showing the Emirates Towers in Dubai is a testimony to the country's dynamic growth in recent decades. The 175 Fils stamp featuring the majestic falcon, pays tribute to the culture of the Emirates, while the 275 Fils stamp, depicting a Mosque, showcases Islamic architecture of the UAE. The 375 Fils stamp, bearing the image of a dhow, reflects the pearl-diving off the coasts of the UAE and the developed industry of shipbuilding.
